Marvel Comics announced that their male hero of yore was no longer worthy to hold the mighty hammer Mjölnir.

"The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription," said Marvel editor Wil Moss in a statement. "The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!"

Wait, there’s more.

"This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR,” said writer Jason Aaron. “This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before."

Thor will be Marvel’s eighth comic featuring a female in its leading role, which the publisher says “aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.”

So watch your back, Captain America.

I have no problem with a strong female cartoon character. I used to love watching "Fantastic Four" on Saturday morning TV when I was growing up, and Sue Storm was my 2nd favorite, behind The Human Torch.

But why can't they create a new heroine, rather than usurping an existing character?

That is my question.

Comics do this kind of thing all the time, and regardless of what they claim this will be temporary. They're had SpiderGirl, Mexican Spiderman, a girl Robin, etc. Heck at one point they even had an alien Thor that lasted a couple of years, but in the end they always bring it back to the classic hero. This isn't even the first woman to wield the hammer, Storm from the X-men is.

The reason the are doing this to an existing character instead of creating a new one is for the wow factor, they hope it will generate sales. Same reason they made Captain Marvel gay.

And regardless of what this guy said in the interview, this woman isn't Thor. Thor is the name of the son of Odin, the name doesn't go with the hammer. Thor, for whatever reason, is no longer worthy to wield the hammer so it goes to somebody who is... but that doesn't make her Thor. She's still whatever her name was before, she simply now wields the power of Thor.

Thors hammer, named Mjolnir, has been wielded by other worthy people from time to time...  Captain America, Storm, Eric Masterson a regular human, Odin Thors dad, plus his grandad and great grandad have all used it as well. In other realities outside the prime Marvel universe even more have wielded the hammer...  Rogue from X-men, Conan The Barbarian, Spider-Man 2099, and in DC Marvel crossovers even Superman and Wonder Woman.
