| Went and seen Iron Man 3 today great movie. Seen the preview for Trek. Looked awesome. However I am sure now it is Khan. I was hoping that they were going to use a little known villain the Captain that was on the prison planet that killed the green chick. But that is not what they did. | |

| No, the villain character is named John Harrison from everything I've seen. Not that it matters, movie sucks regardless. | |

| They soon discover the real Cory is imprisoned in a cell, put there by the impostor, who is none other than Fleet Captain Garth of Izar (Steve Ihnat), a famous starship captain and one of Kirk's personal heroes. Garth's crew had mutinied against him when he had gone insane, the result of injuries in a rescue mission. Aliens from Antos tried to teach Garth just enough shapeshifting abilities to heal said injuries; he taught himself complete shifting. Garth tried to attack Antos before his crew rebelled.
That is who I was thinking that would have been cool

| As JJ never could come up with something original, at best guess, he's using the concept of the Eugenics Wars from actual Trek canon. So John Harrison is likely a product of said wars, as Khan was in real Trek.
To bolster this, JJ is introducing the character Carol Marcus. Not the real one from the real Trek mind you, but his version. JJ's Marcus is a Starfleet Officer in the sciences division. Other than JJ wants it that way, there is no reason this Marcus would hook up with Kirk, but she does. I'm guessing it's so she can create the "JJ Device".

| Oh, I'll go see it too. Probably on opening night.
That still doesn't make me respect what Jar Jar has done to the franchise.

| Never implied you shouldn't go see it. Just not to compare stories. | |

| Saw Into Darkness.... First off, the required spoiler... - Spoiler:
The villain is indeed Kahn.
It's an excellent action / adventure movie, as was the first Jar Jar trek movie. It's also a pretty good Trek movie. Jar Jar has obviously heard the criticism from fans regarding his disregard of series cannon, and has done his homework. There are more references and allusions to "original" Trek than you can shake a stick at, including some scenes lifted from original cannon almost word for word. A nice nod to at least one of the paperback book "trek" novels, too. Some would say that parts of it were lifted right from one of 'em. Seems that as is often the case with Trek versions, it takes one first effort before they hit their stride. While I still would prefer the original timeline, it's a good movie for this new timeline.

| Sorry, I haven't seen this movie, but I know - Spoiler:
the only spoiler is that this isn't Star Trek. The First Jar Trek movie, Jar Trek I, which they erroneously called "Star Trek XI", was closer to the new "Star Wars" films than it was to Star Trek. And I have no doubt the same can be said of Jar Trek II. 'ell, I think the Mission Impossible movies are closer to the Mission Impossible tv show than Jar Trek is to Star Trek.

| Well it didn't do as well as Paramount hoped it would after 4 days. So any chance of a significant profit, went out the window. Now it's a matter of getting at least the production costs back. | |

Sorry eber. Not a flop (yet), but certainly a disappointment to Paramount. They expected over $100 million in it's first 4 days, but it only made $70 million. It cost $190 million to make. Next weekend is Memorial Day weekend, and new releases will bash the snot out of Trek. If they can't make $190 million in domestic sales by next weekend, then yeah, a flop. The first movie made it's costs in the first 2 weekends. But it took it a month to make $191 million.

| I'd think they would make a significant amount from BD/DVD sales / rentals down the road, too. Many Trek fans will buy it just to maintain their collections. | |

Merchandising is a totally different beast. To recoup production costs, the monies come from domestic ticket sales. Anything over, plus overseas ticket sales are profit. An exception would be a direct to DVD production. In that instance, they sell airing rights to a network(s).
