It's one thing to want people to wake up to the Moslim threat, it's another to resort to their behavior and attempt to harm people and frame them for it. Their religion produces it's own bad publicity a hundred times over daily, if people are to dumb to see it, you're not going to get them to see it by being insane yourself.
"Michael Sibley: Bombs, Quran planted by Georgia 'patriot' in park to sow fear
Michael Sibley, a Georgia resident, planted two pipe bombs last November in a Roswell park in order to “teach Americans a lesson.” The 67-year-old placed the pipe bomb IEDs inside of a backpack, along with a Quran and a fabricated list of potential terrorism targets. Sibley appeared in federal court this week to face the relatively light charges of “conveying false information” and attempting to damage federal property.
Writes Atlanta’s 11Alive.com: “The FBI was able to identify Sibley as the person responsible for placing the device in the park and arrested him at his Marietta home on a criminal complaint. The complaint charges Sibley with presenting false information regarding the explosive, along with the attempt to damage federal property with the device.”
“The defendant allegedly placed a bag containing what appeared to be pipe bombs in Vickery Creek Park,” said Acting U.S. Attorney John Horn. “This arrest should reassure the community that serious crimes like this will be investigated thoroughly and all leads followed to identify the perpetrator.”
According to court documents, Sibley called himself a “patriot” whose mission was to alert his fellow Americans that terrorist strikes could occur anywhere, at anytime, even in remote areas of the country.
“[Sibley]…felt no one was paying attention to what was going on the world,” the government alleged, according to court affidavits. “Sibley felt if he placed the package in a Roswell park then people would finally get that this type of activity could happen anywhere.”
One of the “targets” that Sibley had listed and included in the sack was a Jewish center in downtown Atlanta. He also had a map with Atlanta's train system circled, and listed the Atlanta Falcons NFL team on his list of targets. He planted the Quran – the central religious text of Islam – inside the bag. The name Sibley wrote on the outside of the bag was “Mina Khodari,” a fictitious, Middle Eastern-sounding name.
Muslim leaders said that Sibley’s ill-conceived “warning” accomplished nothing – other than to engender animosity toward Georgia’s Islamic community.
“I think what Michael Sibley did was beyond reckless and had he been successful with his ill-conceived scheme, the Muslim community could very well have been in line for some severe backlash,” said Muslim attorney M. Khurram Baig. “This incident serves as yet another reminder that violence and hate are not the sole property of any particular group of people and that vigilance can truly prevent tragedy. It also reminds us that as Muslims, constant community and civic engagement is critical to helping heal divides and misunderstandings so that people like Mr. Sibley may one day see Islam for what it is, not what they think it is.”
As to why Sibley wasn't charged with an act of terrorism, Dean Obeidallah from the Daily Beast argues: “After all, under federal law, ‘domestic terrorism’ is defined as acts ‘dangerous to human life’ that violate federal or state laws and ‘appear to be intended’ to influence government policies or ‘intimidate or coerce a civilian population.’ Sibley arguably was using violence to change government policy (i.e. increased surveillance of American Muslims, or worse).”
