Wondering if you all think if Dark Matter will bring back more space based sci fi? If done well I think it could sounds like a good plot.

If it's popular it might. Hard to tell though, the last big so called space scifi was Battlestar Galactica and after the first season they barely even did anything in space, they were to busy putting on a soap opera. I think that's why Ascension sucked, they were trying to recreate BSG right down to using Trica Helfer.

So, hopefully they will do it right and people will like it. Then others will want on that wagon.

With the Canadians in charge I hope they do not try the so called edgy thing again. Every time a series tries to get young viewers with the so called edgy thing it means it's demise. We seen it with BSG SGU the prequel to BSG was so bad I cannot even remember the name.

I used to love that show Sea Quest until they started to mess with it trying to get a younger audience. Only problem is we have far more baby boomers.

Nobody cares about baby boomers though, they don't spend the big bucks. If they actually cared what baby boomers wanted to see, all these shows wouldn't be full of homosexuality and sleaze.

They cater and gear all these shows to people thirty and under. They are the ones who spend all the money on the junk advertised.

No, it won't. Sci-Fi was always a hard sell for broadcast television. Nothing has changed.

The point is, if a space based scifi series is popular and successful, other people will want to copy it just like they do with every other type of show. So yes, one popular space based scifi show will lead to more. It's no different than how "American Idol" led to "America has talent", "The voice", etc. as soon as somebody sees success in a area of tv others want some too. Same thing happens in reverse, Producers/channels see "firefly" get canceled by Fox, see that BSG spin off and "Stargate Universe" fail on Styfy and they think; "well nobody wants to see space based scifi. it's a losing market."

I disagree Eber. Look at the most successful and popular space based scifi show to date (Star Trek). If not for Lucille Ball, the original series never would have got a third season, and thus went into syndication. Even TNG was almost cancelled. In the end, Enterprise was cancelled.

How about Babylon 5, Firefly, and Farscape.

The problem is expense. SciFi in general is expensive to produce, and space based most of all. Lost in Space, turned into stuck on a planet. Space 1999? Try Moonbase 1999. 70's and 80's met the same fate (BSG and Buck Rodgers).

These were all popular shows. However they were also VERY expensive to produce. As such, they had to meet higher standards than any other show to meet "successful" meaning profitable.

B5 ran it's course. They said 5 years. Firefly SAAB all had good numbers but were expensive and networks were going for the cheap reality shows big profits.

Yes scifi shows tend to be more expensive. And expense plays a part, I'd not deny that. Yet my statement is true for any type of show including space based scifi. The more successful shows in one genre the more likely others will make more shows in that genre. So yes, just one successful space based shows will make it far more likely that others will follow suit.
