I need help with my comp

My comp has been shut down for a year now and I tried to update my Windows files and I cannot. I was thinking about setting it back to factory condition however I not sure I want to do that. I have not got all the paperwork and my house is a mess right now. I am getting Error 80072F8F any ideas? Or should I just junk this one and go get a new one.

Well don't throw it away yet. I looked up that error and apparently it is simply a problem with your computers time not matching the update servers time. Make sure your computers clock is set to the correct time and date then try updating again.

If that doesn't work, let me know what version of windows you are running.

Go download malwarebytes and Avast form these links. Between those two programs, they catch and kill most things.

Just click the blue download button for each. Then after that finishes click on each downloaded file to install. Once they are installed they are both pretty easy to run scans with. Have each scan your whole drive, C drive on most peoples comp, and they will get all but the very worst stuff. Doesn't matter what order you run them in, probably take a long time to run each, but they work on 99% of the stuff out there. If one can't remove something, the other one usually will.

I would be leery of downloading any software from anyplace besides the software vendor's own servers. In the case of Avast! for example, use http://www.avast.com/en-us/download-software

Some of the download sites, particularly CNET / download.com have been caught bundling malware with the A/V software (and other types) that you're getting off those sites.

You can find numerous other security related sites by searching for the term cnet bundling malware.

You might have to hunt for it, they're often rather well hidden, but you only want to get software from the manufacturers' own site. If they don't offer one, and force you to use a 3rd party site, I wouldn't use that vendor's software.

Well in general you're advise is right, but snap files is a safe download site. It has 100% positive and safe ratings from McAffee, Norton, etc that's why I use it. It's one of the few download sites that can be trusted. I've used them for six years and never had a single problem.
