To my friends following my posts here, I apologize. I thought you guys left after Teen Wolf got cancelled. Anyhoo, WTF am I talking about?
What we missed, was said in Ep 9 last season. Ryn tells Ben the pod came back for her so they can kill her. The reason is because of a story about the child of a man and mermaid causing genocide among the mermaids. At the time, we thought she was referencing the same junk as Helen.
She wasn't. She IS that child, or one of them, but it seems she does not know it. But her pod does. The military knows she exists. Just not who she is on land. So they'll kill every last one until they find her. The reason is obvious. Imagine thousands of humans as fast and strong as Ryn, that can also regenerate (like wolverine). Now put them in a military uniform. Medical aspects as well. Illness and sickness would become history. What would the value of that be?
So how did that scene tip us off we missed something? Because she said she wanted to make love like a human. Remember, the female mermaid decides when she will mate, and with what male. They don't make love. And certainly do not ask. So that scene was Ryn being totally human.
Lastly, what hints am I talking about? There were quite a few, but spread out well. In the pilot, Ryn had no problem changing into human form, and walking. But as the show went on, True mermaids do not know how to walk, and some never complete the transformation, thus die on land. Ryn easily learned english and human objects, like the helicopter that took her sister. True mermaids still have problems speaking and instead hiss. When the pod took off chasing the deer, even with a headstart, Ryn easily caught up with and passed all of them. Ryn said Donna taught her how to fight. It she were a true mermaid, why would she have to do that? Wouldn't Ryn have learned WITH Donna? Ryn warned Katrina she was stronger. But Katrina went there, and lost.
So Ryn is a hybrid. She just doesn't seem to know it, or is keeping it secret.
