This sucks..........
TNT has canceled its fantasy-adventure series The Librarians after four seasons, but a new home for the show is being sought. Unless one has the good fortune to be a seemingly eternal property like The Simpsons or Supernatural, all scripted TV shows must eventually come to an end, no matter how much their fans might still love them. This is now (at least for the time being) the case for The Librarians, which premiered in December 2014, and produced a total of 42 episodes.
For those unfamiliar, The Librarians was a spinoff of TNT’s The Librarian TV movies starring Noah Wyle, of which there were three. To kickoff that series, Wyle’s Flynn Carsen accepts a job as a librarian at the Metropolitan Public Library, not aware that what appears to be a normal building is actually centuries old and protects a multitude of ancient magical artifacts from those who would attempt to use said artifacts for evil purposes.
The Librarians series counted Rebecca Romijn (X-Men), Christian Kane (Leverage), Lindy Booth (Dawn of the Dead), John Harlan Kim (Neighbours), and TV mainstay John Larroquette (Night Court) among its main titular team, with Wyle’s Flynn appearing on a recurring basis. Also recurring on The Librarians were veteran names like Bob Newhart, Jane Curtin, and Matt Frewer. The fourth season finale aired on February 7, and producer Dean Devlin now confirms that it will be the series’ last episode on TNT. However, Devlin also plans to try and find The Librarians a new home.
While fans are welcome to have some hope that Devlin will find a new network willing to air The Librarians, it’s also important that they don’t get too set on the idea. It’s very common for producers to shop freshly canceled series around to other outlets, but only on rare occasions does that approach actually work. The vast majority of canceled TV shows never come back, and fans need to be prepared for the possibility that The Librarians won’t either. Thankfully, season four didn’t end on a cliffhanger, although its ending did open up lots of possibilities for where season 5 might take the story, should it come to pass.
The Librarians is but the latest casualty among TNT’s long-running original drama series, as TNT boss Kevin Reilly continues to change the network’s creative direction. Major Crimes – a spinoff of previous popular TNT drama The Closer – was canceled after six seasons late last year. Season 5 of The Last Ship – which is expected to air in 2018 – has also been heavily rumored to be that series’ last, ever since production wrapped last fall. Once all three programs have ended, that will leave TNT without any of the original dramas that it developed prior to Reilly coming aboard to run things.
