| So I was watching the last ship. And man did they get it wrong. They had an MA shooting a sniper rifle MA stands for Master At Arms. Which would never shoot a sniper rifle. It would be a GM. Gunners Mate. That is what they do. They make sure weapons are in good working order and shoot all the time. Every Gunners Mate I knew had his expert rifle. | |

| Isn't a MA basically a cop for the ship? I don't see why somebody in that field wouldn't necessarily not be an expert rifle. Maybe he might have been the best shot on board, especially with the deaths and crew that have resigned leaving them short handed. Or maybe the GM was one of the guys on the boarding party? | |

| Yes but your gunners mates are your best shooters. It is what they do. MAs are proficient in pistols and internal security of the ship. You have what is called a security team. It is volunteer. Except the MAs and GMs. They have to be on it. Just because I shot a 197 out of 200 I still would not have been asked to make the shot. | |

| Oh and one other thing. Discharging a full automatic weapon on a ship is definitely not a good idea. Therefore, during Navy basic training, you won't get to fire the M-16 rifle. Instead, you qualify with the M-9 pistol and the Mossberg 500 shotgun. Shore stations carry the M16 and some the still carry the M14. Ships do carry the M16 for outside the ship not inside. I am not sure but they also used to carry the M1 Garand when I was in. | |

| I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying, I'm just thinking the short staff situation might be the reason. The security team you mentioned was probably the people who made up the boarding party. The MA might have been the only one left on the ship, maybe the GM was on the hospital ship or dead. It's like the guy running the sonar looking for subs, he'd been trained but had never done it in actual practice before. But they had to have him do it because he was all they had.
They still have that Army guy on board, plus now the Australian and Israeli. Seriously with how they are doing a lot more ground work then that ship would normally do, the crew shortages, and the fact that they found Army, Marines, and Air Force in the town, I'm surprised they don't have a more diverse crew then they do now. It could be interesting to have security/boarding team made up of some of each. Maybe even an Air Force guy with radar experience on the bridge or something. Maybe even find some Coast Guard guys to fill some empty spots. The Captain could even start recommissioning some some older former military people they find.
I guess I'm just saying I can see why things might not be done the proper, or normal way, simply because of the situation they are in without much outside support or replacements.

| Maybe. But using M4s on the inside of a ship is a big no no. Even a small bullet hole can be bad. | |

| Internationals on ships is not unheard of. Matter of fact they are doing exchange programs all the time. Ship security details are specifically trained. We used to get mad because we could not put the clip into the pistol until we actually seen a threat. By that time it would be to late. | |

| Well sure, but now they actually need people, international or not, just to fill out the crew.
Last season they had the one guy... don't know his name, the father of the pregnant girls baby... training a bunch of new people for the security/boarding team. I'm assuming that a ship that size wouldn't normally be doing all the stuff on shore that they have them doing, but they can't call in the Seals or the Marines anymore.

| That's why I stopped watching this show after the first 2 episodes. They never even tried to put any realism in the show. | |

They do try they have gotten some things right. But when the XO ordered everyone to the back of the ship the security team would have known something was up. Not to mention you have code words if the bridge is taken. Anyone on watch would not have left their station. Especially the Senior NCO.s would have known. That part really did irritate me. But I still watch it.
