So I have a little icon that says free windows 10 upgrade. Sounds to good to be true. I have checked it out but want another opinion.

Huh. Did it just appear on your computer? Have you run any virus checks?
I just went looking around the net and found this... http://www.cnet.com/news/how-to-reserve-your-free-copy-of-windows-10/
If that is what you got it might be legit.
Check out this site... http://superuser.com/questions/922068/how-to-disable-the-get-windows-10-icon-shown-in-the-notification-area-tray
Is that what your icon looks like? If so, I think that is the real deal. I'm not sure if I'll take it if they offer it to me. I'm relatively happy with Win7, still think XP was better, and every time I have to update they change so much it takes a long time for me to get used to it.

Microsloth has added that to your systray area; they are heavily pushing their "free" upgrade to W10 offer. W10 is coming out 7/29. And now that we're a few days into it, it is possible that there are copycat malware programs pretending to be the legitimate offer.
Myself, I'm not going to jump for a while; I suspect they are setting up a trap for some point in the future, it's free now, but if you want to continue using it, at some point they are going to require a purchased subscription.
