Goodbye Hostess Empty
PostSubject: Goodbye Hostess   Goodbye Hostess EmptyMon Nov 19, 2012 9:50 am

I knew they were history around 10 years ago, when my daughter was taking an economics class in college. It just took the workers 10 years to see it.

No, the workers were not at fault here. The executives and shareholders were. Regardless of what they did, the workers lost, and they knew it going into the strike. Kudo's to them for standing their ground.

More on this in a bit.

So by now, you've probably read the news. Most here I believe to be my age (50's-60's) or so. So like me, if you have kids, they are likely adults themselves, some with children of their own. Regardless, the chances that you or your children, have never eaten a Hostess product, are quite slim. We can even extend that to grandchildren, and in some cases, great-grandchildren. That's how far back they go.

So have lunch boxes across the nation, really been "nuked"? Absolutely, if you think about it. Sandwiches alone lost: Wonder bread, Merita bread and Nature's Pride bread. If I forget Joe/Jane Doe and the average household, I still have 5 branches of the military that need to find a new vendor for bread.

So what about those snack cakes/pies, etc? Look no further than the current state of affairs, as it pertains to purchases of existing products still available. Quite the madhouse really. Most retailers had a hard enough time stocking Hostess products in the first place.

Gone are: Twinkies, Ding Dong's, Cupcakes, Fruit Pies, Snoballs, Ho Ho's, Suzy Q's, Zingers, Mini-Muffins, Donette's, and Donuts. And that's not even mentioning Dolly Madison products, aside from the Zingers.

Fresh produce (apples, pears, banana's, etc) actually cost more to stick in a lunch, if you consider they have NO shelf life.

So yeah, America's lunchbox definitely got "nuked".

I really don't care. The only snack cakes I REALLY ever liked were Zingers, and they stopped being good back when they got bought out. After that they just tasted exactly like the other junk. And none of them taste like they did back in the day. They were all better early 80's or before, now they are all bland, dry, and taste the same regardless of brand or variety.

It would be like if Coke switched to "New Coke", then made all their products taste just like it regardless of the name on the label, and then bought out Pepsi and did the same with all their products as well. (For that matter all the pop was better back before the switch to corn syrup as well.)

As far as Wonder Bread, I have no comment. Don't believe I ever ate any. My parents said it was horrible and never bought it.

P.S. I remember my Grandma telling me Twinkies used to have a banana cream filling in them way back when and how good they were. Then they switched to bland vanilla cream, shrunk the size, used cheaper ingredients, loaded them with tons of chemicals etc... just like all of them.

P.P.S. Forgot to add, I'm sure somebody else will buy it up and use all the iconic names. Of course they will all taste just a little different and less good, just like after every other change... but I doubt they will be gone completely.

I liked Suzy Q's when they were first made, but then the company changed the composition of the cream filling and they didn't taste as good. Their products really did go down hill, except for Wonder Bread which has always been an unhealthy, bleached white bread. Part of the bleaching chemical always remains in the bread, and it's bad for your health.

Anyway, my favorite junk food has always been Yodels, Ring Dings, and devil dogs, none of which I can get here in Colorado Springs. :(

But I wonder just how bad off the Hostess employees were? Were they paid so poorly that they'd rather be unemployed? Was it worth losing their jobs over in a rotten economy like this?

Why no bail out for Hostess from the Pretender and Chief? Has Obama blamed it on Bush yet?

Watch what happens, next. This is a buy out designed to push out union labor. God forbid you should be forced to survive without your golden spongecakes

I hate unions because they steal members money and use it to support rotten, unAmerican candidates like Obama. When I was FORCED to be a member of the IBEW they used my membership money to support candidates I hated. That's just wrong!

Yes, and yes. Unemployment benefits, are more than they would have got returning to work. Many had already secured jobs elsewhere.

As I stated, returning to work was never an option. They lost everything. The strike was a last act of defiance.

One worker had worked there for 36 years. 10 years ago, he had to accept a 60% cut in his pension, just to secure it. Now, regardless if he worked or not, he has no pension at all.

That resonates with me. I've worked the last 32 years of my life for the federal government. 25 of those years active duty in the military. If the same happened to me, I'm not sure what I'd do.

You appear to know how much those employees were paid. So how much was it? That's key to understanding this. And why is the worker who had a 60% cut in his pension better off now without any pension at all?

I'm an Air Force veteran. What branch were you in?

What's key to understand here, is exactly what happened. But America doesn't care. Not until it's too late. Then they'll scream "how could this happen" when in fact, it was going on the whole time.

I was Army.

As I explained in another thread, Drake's Bakers was owned by Hostess, so it does affect you. Now, not only cannot you get them where you live, you can't get them anywhere.

Hostess, Drakes, Dolly Madison, all the same...
